As a mom, I have always been passionate about keeping my kids as healthy as possible through holistic and natural approaches.
When they were babies, going back 14 years ago, I made baby food from scratch, natural baby care products and gave them medicine only when absolutely necessary.
During that time, the natural health movement was not as popular as it is today. However, with the rise of social media and the internet, information is so readily available to us today. I am excited share with you some of my top tips to help you transition your family to a more natural lifestyle.
I began making my own products as I learned about the many chemicals and toxins that are lurking in our products. These harmful ingredients are in our medications, soaps, toothpaste, laundry detergent, shampoos, and more. Common ingredients and loose terms such as “fragrance” are extremely harmful to our health and have been linked to allergies, asthma, hormonal issues, headaches, and even cancer.
The government does not require any mandatory testing for these products before they are sold and there is no federal regulations for beauty products. To make matters worse, anyone can claim their product is organic or natural. The word “organic” is not regulated the same way as it is for the food industry.
“Natural products” should be used with caution. A study cited on Dr. Mercola’s website released a report that found at least one toxic, cancer linked chemical found in over 40% of products that call themselves natural. This information is very concerning for our children being exposed to these unnecessary chemicals over the long term. There are harmful chemicals contained in natural brands of toothpaste, deodorant, sunscreen, shampoo, laundry detergent, makeup, household cleaners and many other common products we use daily.
Your best protection is to avoid exposure to these harmful chemicals by making your own products or being an informed consumer. Use the “Think Dirty” app or go on the EWG.org website to check on the safety of products you are using and to be sure of which chemicals to avoid.
As a concerned mom, I searched for alternatives to these harmful chemicals and found essential oils, which have changed my life. With essential oils, I was able to take care of most of our health care needs, replace harmful products, have natural remedies to replace many medications and improve the overall health and wellness of my family.
Essential oils are extracts from plants that come from the stem, bark, roots, leaves and other parts of the plant. They are extremely powerful and have multiple, often unrelated uses. The cost literally pennies per drop and do not expire. They have no side effects, are safe and effective.
Natural family wellness is a lifestyle and the essential oils can be your tool box! As your transitioning to a more natural lifestyle, my advice to you is to pick your low hanging fruit. Committing to making changes will take time. Start small and replace things in your household one by one. Before you know it, you will be a pro. Your family will feel better and you will sleep better at night knowing you are making positive changes for your family.
Here are some of my top tips for a more natural home:
Clean home/clean air
It may surprise you that the air in the home is one of the worst air quality you can find. Because people don’t open their windows, the air is just recirculating. I encourage you to first open your windows and get some fresh air in there at least a few times per week.
Diffuse with essential oils: Adding a few drops of essential oils to a diffuser, can purify the air in your home, help with allergies and improve mood, sleep and concentration.
General day of diffusing with kids:
Morning: 4 drops each of peppermint and wild orange to uplift the mood and wake the house up.
Afternoon: 2 drops rosemary, 2 drops peppermint, 2 drops frankincense for focus and concentration (great for homework time )
Evening: 4 drops lavender, 4 drops Breathe (clear breathing and relaxation for restful sleep)
All Purpose cleaner – get rid of your toxic cleaners. If your child can get sick from a cleaner, throw it out. No need to have these chemicals locked up in the cabinet.
All purpose cleaner recipe – 16 oz bottle, 1 cup vinegar, 1 cup water, 5 drops lemon, 5 drops melaleuca, or 10 drops On Guard
Place a few drops of peppermint and cedarwood on cotton pads. Wipe down counters and leave cotton pads in areas where ants are coming in.
Air freshener – 8 oz bottle , ½ cup distilled water , 20 drops of any combination of essential oil. I love wild orange, eucalyptus and spearmint.
Scrub cleanser for toilet, bath, and tile
¾ cup baking soda
¼ castile soap
1 tbs water
1 tbs vinegar
5 drops lemon, 5 drops melaleuca
Shoe Spray – make a small spray bottle of water, 10 drops melaleuca. Spray bottoms of shoes when you come home.
Laundry – use OnGuard laundry detergent. Safe for babies and kills germs. Add some melaleuca, lemon and baking soda as a booster.
Get rid of anything with the word fragrance. Essential oils make beautiful perfumes. If you are sensitive to smells, often it is because the chemicals contained in the product are toxic.
½ cup unscented castile soap
4 tbs vegetable glycerin
3 tbs FCO
10 drops of your favorite essential oil
5 drops lemon
5 drops peppermint
Or 10 drops OnGuard (great for oral health)
2 cups of water in 16 oz bottle
Shake before each use.
Body lotion – use plain fractionated coconut oil or doTERRA unscented lotion and add a few drops of essential oil such as lavender or Aromatouch.
After Sun Spray
1 cup aloe vera juice
¼ cup FCO
1 tsp vitamin E
8 drops each lavender, peppermint and melaleuca
Avoid toxic bug sprays and use essential oils such as doTERRA’s TerraShield spray or make your own.
For kids 3 and up, use a 4 oz spray bottle: 2 oz witch hazel, 2 distilled water, 5 drops cedarwood, 5 drops lavender, 5 drops spearmint, 5 drops geranium 3 drops lemongrass.
Common concerns and natural remedies:
Immune support – colds, coughs, congestion.
In a steaming bowl of hot water, add 1 drop OnGuard, 1 drop melaleuca, 1 drop Breathe, place a towel over your head and inhale steam for 5 minutes (no more than that)
For general immune support and to fight colds and viruses, make a 10ml roller bottle, add 20 drops OnGuard, fill the rest with fractionated coconut oil and swipe the bottoms of the feet a few times a day.
Allergies – lavender, peppermint and lemon behind ears and back of neck. Diffuse breathe and put on chest for asthma
Cuts, scrapes, wounds – Apply Correct X or a couple of drops lavender and melaleuca and frankincense. Dilute with coconut oil.
Digestive Issues – Digestzen blend applied to the abdomen. You can also drink one drop in 8 oz of water to settle stomach issues.
Relaxation, sleep and stress – diffuse oils such as frankincense and lavender. Wild orange is good for anxiety. Sandalwood, Balance, Serenity are good for relaxation.
Diffuse 4 drops each of lavender and frankincense and 2 drops wild orange for anxiety and stress.
Focus, energy, concentration – diffuse wild orange and peppermint. Apply In tune roller bottle or 2 drops each rosemary and peppermint with coconut oil and apply to back of neck.
Head and neck tension, bruises, pain and inflammation – Apply Deep blue oil to area of concern or peppermint, frankincense and lavender diluted with coconut oil
